Around Wanaka
Wanaka is situated in the heart of the Southern Lakes district, New Zealand. Set at the foot of the spectacular Southern Alps, on the shores of beautiful Lake Wanaka, this dramatic and diverse area is the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park, and the West Coast.
Queenstown International Airport is just an hour away, while Wanaka’s own airport is only 10 minutes from the town.
Wanaka enjoys easy access to two world class alpine ski areas at Treble Cone and Cardona, a newly opened terrain park, and New Zealand’s only Nordic ski area, with an extensive network of groomed ski trails. Back country skiing and heliskiing are also available.
As well as being a winter playground, Wanaka enjoys a hot summer climate while Wanaka’s mountains are a spectacular backdrop to autumn colours.
To just relax, there are tours of Central Otago’s burgeoning wine region, with great restaurants, or local vineyards internationally known for their Pinot Noir.
For the more energetic, there are great walking and mountain bike trails in and around Wanaka, or if you prefer, an 18 hole golf course. There is world renowned trout and salmon fishing in lake and rivers, as well as sailing, canoeing or water skiing. Just 50 minutes away, at the head of the Matukituki Valley, is the magnificent Mt Aspiring National Park with great day or multiday tramps and climbing. Eco and nature tours explore the environs of Lake Wanaka and the surrounding region.
